Quality Reduction

For the points pictorial quality , reduction of complexity , structuring of perception , motivation , creation of a group identity , co-ordination and synchronisation , relation to feasibility and preferred instruments and typical ideal solutions , numerous interesting overlaps occur between guiding principles and Thomas Kuhn s concept of paradigms (cf Kuhn 1975). 

Animal assays. When assessing the nature of a protein quality reduction, the conventional methods of protein quality measurement have certain limitations. For example, a reduced TD in an NPU assay is not necessarily the result of a reduced protein digestion. Obviously the same result will be obtained if the increase of fecal nitrogen is caused by an enhanced excretion of endogenous protein or if there is a fixation of metabolic nitrogen by the colonic micro-flora. 

For various food ingredients or undesirable foreign substances, limits can be assigned (shaded field in Fig. 1-1) outside which a significant quality reduction can occur compared to the initial quality. The importance of individual ingredients for product quality can vary considerably and therefore also the width of the allowable concentration. The importance and allowable concentration range are determined by the component s chemical structure.

Increased attention to quality. Reduction of impurities and by-products, and Implementing advanced control systems can ensure constant product quality. 

Costs in Safety. The hazards present are a direct function of the fire insurance rates that can be obtained. A decrease of the hazards may effect important savings in the insurance items of the overhead costs. In this connection, the cost of a complete automatic sprinkler system may be entirely defrayed by the resulting decrease in fire insurance rates. Such protective schemes and equipment are not so easily paid for, but they frequently can be justified on economic grounds alone. Hazards also involve loss of production and men .s. services as well as impairment of product quality. Reduction of hazards thus becomes an economic problem.
