Quality management programs

Once you have identified all the PSM and ESH programs and elements within your organization, you can develop a chart that shows the potential synergies with your Quality Management program. One axis of this table will be the programs and elements you identified and listed in Exhibit 2-7. The other axis will be the requirements of your Quality Management system. 

Continuous improvement is designed in to quality management programs. You may be able to demonstrate this in other quality initiatives within your company. Also, in many companies one or more aspects of PSM or ESH performance have stagnated and shown little improvement. A quality approach may reinvigorate these programs. 

Successful Quality Management programs usually have clearly defined missions and objectives. Of the organizations that have committed to integration, we have found no single example that meets our needs. The following mission statement and goals have been adapted from several sources.

Pareto Diagrams are used in quality management programs to reveal the pattern of variation in performance and any predominant tendency. The data are displayed in the form of a histogram.

Many workplace, environmental, food safety, and other regulations apply to oilseed and oil processors (55). Some of the regulations required in the United States are discussed. Many other countries have similar requirements, but if they do not, it would be prudent for oilseed solvent extraction operations and vegetable oil processors to consider meeting these regulations and for these industries to have environmental, health and safety, and quality management programs (135, 136).

Companies in the process industries have typically implemented a wide range of quality management programs in recent years. In many cases, there is a strong overlap between quality management, OIM, and PSM. A brief discussion of some of the quality techniques that are used in the process industries is provided below. 

ASME allows products that manufactured in conformance with its standards to be stamped with an appropriate seal. A manufacturer first has to have his or her quality management program accepted by an ASME committee. The manufacturer can then certify products that he makes and can stamp them. 

As Table 6 shows, the task of assuring the quality of the bonded assembly begins at the project stage and does not end until production ceases. A typical quality management program for adhesive appUcations is set out in Table 7. This model has been adopted with very satisfactory results in many areas of the manufacturing industry.
