From 1977 until 1989 he was professor in the Department of Material Science/Plastics at the University Kassel. Since 1989 he was professor for plastics technology at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he retired in 2006. From 1987 until 1992 he was also the head of the Siiddeutsche Kunststoffzentrum. In 1992 he became honorary professor at the Qingdao University of Science and Technology in China, and in 1996 he was bestowed an honorary Ph. D. degree from the Technical University Budapest. He authored more than 200 papers and 20 books. Professor Ehrenstein is married and has three sons.
