Punch through

This failure mode can be critical during intermediate phases such as after the installation of the first layer of fill material over a soft subsoil. Often construction equipment (e.g. bulldozers or excavators equipped with a mast to install PVDs) is moving over the site in an early stage. Punch through can occur suddenly and be extremely dangerous for labour handling the equipment. 

The same safety approach can be used as discussed with respect to the bearing capacity of foundations in general.

The gates of the MOSFET must be preeisely driven. If the gates turn off too slowly, then a punch-through current ean oeeur between power switeh MOSFET and the synehronous reetifier MOSFET This is where both the MOSFET are momentarily eondueting at the same time. This unrestrieted eurrent would add to the losses and quiekly lead to a failure. Figure 3-31 shows the eritieal periods in the operation of the synehronous reetifier. 

If ignited when under confinement it will explode like gunpowder. If it is contained in a waxed packet, therefore, the latter should be punched through in several places before it is used with a basic incendiary and ignited. 

In the steel tube test, the fragmentation pattern is a measure of whether or not a substance detonated, for example, a substance is capable of detonation if the tube is completely fragmented. The velocity of the reaction front is also a measure of detonation, that is, a detonation has occurred if this velocity is higher than the velocity of sound in the substance. When a witness plate is used, a substance is said to be capable of detonation if either a hole is punched through the plate or the tube is fragmented along its entire length.

Anomalous rectification [3]. Our aim in this section is to show that under certain conditions development of a nonequilibrium space charge may yield, besides the punch through, some additional effects, unpredictable by the locally electro-neutral formulations. We shall exemplify this by considering two parallel formulations—the full space charge one and its locally electro-neutral counterpart. It will be observed that inclusion of the space charge into consideration enables us to account for the anomalous rectification effect that could not be predicted by the locally electro-neutral treatment. Fix a pattern template to the work-table with tape (position the pattern in the correct place with a screen placed in the printer frame and tape it to the table).
