Public utility holding companies

In 1928, the Senate asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to conduct an investigation of the public utility holding companies. The FTC produced a comprehensive and massive report in 1934 and 1935, which ultimately comprised 96 volumes. The report showed that over half the gas produced and more than three-fourths of the interstate gas pipeline mileage in America was controlled by 11 vertically integrated holding companies.
