Water-holding capacity of hemicelluloses (contained in wheat brans and psyllium fiber) and celluloses may decrease mouth to rectum transit time, increase fecal weight, and decrease intraluminal pressure (36). These characteristics might be expected to interfere with calcium absorption decreasing time allowed for intestinal absorption, by diluting the concentration of calcium and... [Pg.177]

Effect of Hemicellulose (Psyllium Fiber) on Manganese Utilization... [Pg.140]

In a series of 28-day studies, the effects of hemicellulose on manganese utilization were investigated. As in the previous studies on wheat bran, the hemicellulose (20 g/subject/day) was incorporated into a bread product. During the two experimental periods, subjects received either the hemicellulose enriched bread or the bread without hemicellulose. Purified psyllium fiber was used as a source of mixed... [Pg.140]

As shown on Table III, the subjects fed 20 g of hemicellulose from purified psyllium fiber excreted significantly more manganese in the feces than when they were fed bread without the hemicellulose supplement. Unlike wheat bran, purified psyllium fiber (sold commercially as a bulk laxative) contains no manganese or phytates hence, any change in fecal manganese excretion when psyllium fiber is added to human diets can probably be credited to the mixture of hemicellulose comprising this product. [Pg.141]

Since psyllium fiber is composed of several hemicelluloses. [Pg.66]

Psyllium is a hydrophilic material in nature and is well known for its water uptake properties, gelling capabilities, soluble and insoluble filxe contents and surface struct. It is a natural polysaccharide and contans high percentage of hemicelluloses. It has simUar molecular constituents to other naturally sourced polysaccharides e.g. alginate, chitosan, guar gum, and has more or less similar physiological functions. [Pg.246]
