Psychosis levetiracetam

Psychiatric adverse events, most often hostility and irritability, have been reported in children taking levetiracetam. Four cases of acute psychosis have also been reported (448). [Pg.680]

Kossoff EH, Bergey GK, Freeman JM, Vining EP. Levetiracetam psychosis in children with epilepsy. Epilepsia 2001 42(12) 1611-3. [Pg.702]

The interpretation of this case is confounded by the use of levetiracetam at the onset of the sjmptoms. In addition, his symptoms appeared just after an admission for videoelectroencephalography, during which he suffered at least one generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Thus, his symptoms could have been a mild form of postictal psychosis. [Pg.1996]

Drug overdose Of 16 796 toxic exposures to antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin, valproic acid, and carbamazepine) in the USA in 2006, 12 resulted in death, as reported by the US Toxic Surveillance System [67 ]. Some specific problems determined by overdose of some old and new antiepileptic drugs have been briefly reviewed. For example, topiramate can cause a significant metabolic acidosis, lamotrigine Stevens-Johnson syndrome, oxcarbazepine hyponatremia, and levetiracetam psychosis. Possible adoption of guidelines for critical care management of overdose are discussed. [Pg.132]

Observational studies A phase 111 study evaluated the safety and efficacy of levetiracetam in 217 children and adults with primary generalized seizures. The most common adverse effects reported by >10% participants were headache and nasopharyngitis. The most frequent treatment-associated adverse effects were headache (4.6%), dizziness and depression (both 4.1%). Serious adverse effects related to treatment with levetiracetam 4.6% of patients experienced convulsion, atrial fibrillation, epilepsy, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, suicidal ideation, erythematous rash, and status epilepticus. One patient each discontinued due to the following adverse effects arrhythmia, convulsions, tremor, aggression, depression, psychosis, and exanthem. One patient with worsening of comorbid schizophrenia committed suicide it had been 43 days since he had last taken levetiracetam at the time [87 -]. [Pg.91]
