There are relatively few chemotherapeutic drugs which cause permeability increases in membranes such as the antifungal polyenes and the antibacterial circular oligopeptides of the tyrocidin, gramicidin and polymyxin families. Most of these are too toxic for systemic use but polymyxins have been given systemically in severe Pseudomonas infections with an attending risk of renal toxicity. [Pg.14]

Getttamidtt. Gentamicin is widely used in the treatment of severe infections. Uses include septicemia, neonatal sepsis, neonatal meningitis, biliary tract infection, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, and endocarditis. Gentamicin is frequently used for empiric therapy in presmned gramnegative bacillary infections before the identification and susceptibility of the causative organism are known. Patients with cystic fibrosis and those in intensive care imits often have Pseudomonas infections and are typically treated with gentamicin. [Pg.188]

As previously noted, carbenicillin is the only widely used /3-lactam antibiotic for the treatment of infection caused by Ps. aeruginosa. Table 7.5 shows the MIC values of fifty strains of Ps. aeruginosa for a range of j8-lactam antibiotics. From the Table, carbenicillin is the only active drug and at the present time it is the least toxic agent with significant activity in the treatment of pseudomonas infections. It may be used alone or in combination with other antibiotics, e.g. aminoglycosides (see Table 7.1). [Pg.360]

Pseudomonas bacteremia has been attributed to the use of material in open-heart surgery that was stored in accidentally contaminated benzalkonium solutions, and after cardiac catheterization caused by inadequate disinfection of the catheters with benzalkonium solutions. In 1961, about 15 patients were reported with Pseudomonas infections caused by cotton pledgets kept in a contaminated aqueous solution used for skin antisepsis before intravenous and intramuscular injection (8). In 1976 there were outbreaks of Pseudomonas cepacia infections in two American general hospitals (9) and pseudobacteremia Pseudomonas cepacia or Enterobacter) caused by contamination of blood cultures in 79 patients in whom contaminated aqueous benzalkonium solutions were used for skin and antisepsis before venepuncture and due to contamination of the samples (SEDA-11, 490) (10). [Pg.422]

The efficacy of nebulized tobramycin 300 mg bd for 4 weeks has been studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 74 patients with bronchiectasis and Pseudomonas infection, without cystic fibrosis (31). [Pg.3439]

Two adults are well on y-globulin prophylaxis. Repeated immunization against staphylococcal antigens helped one man until his death at 20 years from pseudomonas infection (D3). A girl was well on y-globulin treatment for 6 months when this had been discontinued for a further 6 months, against advice, she died from her third proven staphylococcal septicemia. [Pg.255]

Kasuqaroycin. — The unique structure of kasugamycin was established as an aminoglycoside containing a carboxyamidino grouping. This inhibitor of polypeptide synthesis has low toxicity and it is of particular interest for treatment of Pseudomonas infections. [Pg.108]

Kanamycin. — With the exception of Pseudomonas infections, kanamycin has proved to be a valuable antibiotic for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis and serious infections caused by gram-negative bacilli. [Pg.108]

The pathogenesis of Pseudomonas infections is multifactorial, as suggested by the number and wide array of virulence determinants possessed by the bacterium. Multiple and diverse determinants of virulence... [Pg.1752]

Most Pseudomonas infections are both invasive and toxinogenic. The ultimate Pseudomonas infection may be seen as composed of three distinct stages 1) bacterial attachment and colonization 2) local invasion and 3) disseminated systemic disease. [Pg.1752]

The cephalosporins, often in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics, are used in suspected cases of bacteremia due to Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, coliform bacteria, Proteus, or Pseudomonas infection. [Pg.143]

Yes. Its actions are synergistic with those of aminoglycosides, and the combination is used in the therapy of systemic Pseudomonas infections. [Pg.256]
