The only absolute contraindications are mechanical obstruction and necrotizing enterocolitis. Conditions that challenge the success of EN include severe diarrhea, protracted vomiting, enteric fistulae, severe GI hemorrhage, and intestinal dysmotility. [Pg.668]

Oxytocin is used to induce labor for conditions requiring early vaginal delivery such as Rh problems, maternal diabetes, preeclampsia, or ruptured membranes. It is also used to augment abnormal labor that is protracted or displays an arrest disorder. Oxytocin has several uses in the immediate postpartum period, including the control of uterine hemorrhage after vaginal or cesarean delivery. It is sometimes used during second-trimester abortions. [Pg.844]

The physiological purpose of nausea is to discourage food intake, and vomiting is meant to expel food or other toxic substances present in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. Protracted vomiting may not only cause electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, or a malnutrition syndrome, but may also lead to mucosal laceration and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage (Mallory-Weiss syndrome). [Pg.230]

Pulmonary hjrpertension and severe protracted hypoxemia occurred in babies bom to mothers who took naproxen to delay delivery (28). The babies also had disorders of blood clotting, renal function, and bihmbin metabohsm. Necroscopy showed subarachnoid hemorrhage, gastric ulcers, and closed ductus arteriosus. [Pg.2428]
