LIPOPROTEINS. Blood plasma lipoproteins are prominent examples of the class of proteins conjugated with lipid. The plasma lipoproteins function primarily in the transport of lipids to sites of active membrane synthesis. Serum levels of low density lipoproteins (LDLs) are often used as a clinical index of susceptibility to vascular disease. 

IHC techniques provide important tools for the localization of specific antigens within individual cells. In CL IHC the probes used are highly specific antibodies that bind to antigens such as proteins, enzymes, and viral or bacterial products. The bound specific antibody is revealed indirectly by species-specific or class-specific secondary antibodies conjugated to CL enzymes. 

The three major classes of biopolymers found in eukaryotic systems are nucleic acids, proteins, and polysaccharides. The latter class is the most complex with respect to structural and stereochemical diversity. Polysaccharides indeed possess a massive information content. Furthermore, polysaccharides are commonly found in nature covalently attached (conjugated) to other biomolecules such as proteins, isoprenoids, fatty acids, and lipids.1... 

Carbohydrates are certainly important in their own right as key intermediates in cellular metabolism as an essential stractural feature of the nucleic acids as sources of energy as energy reserves for maintenance of structure for lubrication of joints and for other purposes. However, carbohydrates are neither limited to these functions nor confined to the stractures we have developed thus far. Indeed, many of their roles, and much of the excitement associated with carbohydrate chemistry, derives from the properties of their conjugates with other classes of molecules, notably those with lipids and those with proteins.
