Protein kinases deficiency

In a study involving rabbits (Morphis et al 1982), newborn animals were infused with unconjugated bilirubin. When the newborns became symptomatic, and the brains were harvested, it was found that there was a dose-dependent protein kinase deficiency which affected protein phosphorylation. This in turn inhibited other cyclic AMP independent phosphorylation reactions. These studies were performed in whole brain homogenates. [Pg.324]

Vanadium. Vanadium is essential in rats and chicks (85,156). Estimated human intake is less than 4 mg/d. In animals, deficiency results in impaired growth, reproduction, and Hpid metaboHsm (157), and altered thyroid peroxidase activities (112). The levels of coen2yme A and coen2yme Q q in rats are reduced and monoamine oxidase activity is increased when rats are given excess vanadium (157). Vanadium may play a role in the regulation of (NaK)—ATPase, phosphoryl transferases, adenylate cyclase, and protein kinases (112). [Pg.388]

Glycogen storage disease is a generic term to describe a group of inherited disorders characterized by deposition of an abnormal type or quantity of glycogen in the tissues. The principal glycogenoses are summarized in Table 18—2. Deficiencies of adenylyl kinase and cAMP-dependent protein kinase have also been re-... [Pg.151]

PKC signaling is also involved in the plasticity underlying fear learning and memory. Inhibition of PKC in rats impairs acquisition of fear conditioning (Goosens et al. 2000 Li et al. 2002) and mice with a knockout of the isoform of protein kinase C have deficient cued and contextual fear conditioning (Weeber et al. 2000). Inhibitors of PKC also block LTP (MaUnow et al. 1989 Reyman et al. 1988). [Pg.316]
