Protective clothing ballistic performance

It was reported by Sun and Chen (2010) that unidirectional Dyneema fabric showed reduced ballistic performance in terms of energy absorption when compared on a single-layer basis a panel composed of unidirectional Dyneema fabric sheets demonstrated better trauma proof ability. Compared to the 2D fabrics, 3D fabrics offer more possibilities for fibre orientation and fibre networking. For this reason, 3D fabrics have been paid attention for various applications such as in critical stmcture, automobile, aircraft and protective clothing in recent years. [Pg.345]

In this chapter, factors affecting the ballistic performance of various textile-based products, currently used weave stmctures for antiballistic applications and their drawbacks, 3D weave stmctures and weaving techniques, and applications of 3D fabrics for protective clothing have been discussed. [Pg.358]

Protech (protective textiles) These products can offer protection against extreme cold, radiation, harmful particulate matter, harmful chemicals, extreme heat and/or fire, molten metals, bacterial and viral contamination, ballistic and mechanical threats, etc., where high-performance fibers are often used. The current size of the personal protective clothing and equipment market in the European Union is estimated to be about 10billion. Advances in novel specialty fibers, nanoparticles, and the integration of microelectronic components into fabrics and garments have opened up new frontiers in the development of textile-based materials for personal protection. [Pg.14]
