Protective barrier materials military

UHMWPE composite materials and fibers are widely used in military, industrial, and consumer applications. UHMWPE composite films blended with glass fibers are used as insulative barriers in lead automotive batteries (Figure 17.1), whereas porous UHMWPE materials find applications as water filters. UHMWPE fibers are used in mililary and personal protection equipment, such as body armor [1] and cut-resistant gloves for kitchen use (Figure 17.2). Overall, the current commercial success for a wide range of UHMWPE fiber and matrix composites with nonmedical apphcations provides motivation for exploring these materials as candidate biomaterials.
