It is widely accepted that probabilistic approach was first developed and applied in expert systems MYCIN and PROSPECTOR. In these expert systems the likelihood estimates are calculated for several competitive hypothesis H on the basis of available evidences E. In the expert system MYCIN each hypothesis was estimated by a confidence factor CF(H Ei,E2. . . ) as a difference of estimates for the measure of belief MB P[ Ei,E2,. .) and the measure of distrust MD P[ Ei,E2,...) ...

With practitioners always sifting the literature for novel synthetic targets, it was really only a matter of time before someone would notice the okaramines and collect the synthetic treasure that their structures seemed to promise. The successful prospectors were Professor E. J. Corey and two of his co-workers at Harvard University, who, in early 2003, accomplished the first total synthesis of okaramine N (1). As we shall see, the unique structural domains of this target afforded a stringent test of modem syuthetic methods, an examination so taxing that these researchers had to develop a series of entirely novel transformations and creative reaction cascades in order to orchestrate their assembly.

When the administration of President Andrew Johnson acquired Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7,200,000, the transaction was referred to derisively by many as Seward s Folly, after Secretary of State William Seward, who negotiated the deal. Although a few pleas for rational exploration and development, and for fair treatment of native peoples, appeared in the territory s early years (e.g., Kane, 1868), Alaska remained a largely unexplored and unexploited backwater until the Klondike gold strike of 1898 brought thousands of prospectors and support personnel north.
