Polymer propylene oxide

Poly(alI lene glycol)s. While these can be made from polymeri2ation of any alkylene oxide, they are usually prepared either from propylene oxide as the water-insoluble type, or as water-soluble copolymers of propylene oxide and up to 50% ethylene oxide (35,36) (see Polyethers, propylene OXIDE polymers). Current worldwide production is estimated to be about 45,000 t.

Molecular weights of poly(propylene oxide) polymers of greater than 100,000 are prepared from catalysts containing FeCl (40,41). The molecular weight of these polymers is gready increased by the addition of small amounts of organic isocyanates (42). Homopolymers of propylene oxide are also prepared by catalysis using diethylzinc—water (43), diphenylzinc—water (44), and trialkyl aluminum (45,46) systems. 

Propylene oxide polymers are less hydrophilic and also lower in cost and may be prepared by polymerising the oxide in the presence of propylene glycol as an initiator and a caustic catalyst at about 160°C. They have the general structure... 

Block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, less hydrophilic than poly(oxyethylene) glycol and more reactive than the propylene oxide polymers, were introduced by Wyandotte Chemical (USA) under the trade name Pluronic.
