Trimethoprim (Trimpex, Proloprim) is a structural analogue of the pteridine portion of dihydrofolic acid. It differs from the sulfonamides in that it acts at a second step in the folic acid synthetic pathway that is, it... [Pg.517]

Pyrimethamine (Daraprim) is the best of a number of 2,4-diaminopyrimidines that were synthesized as potential antimalarial and antibacterial compounds. Trimethoprim (Proloprim) is a closely related compound. [Pg.614]

I Brand Name(s) Primsol, Proloprim, Trimpex Combinations... [Pg.1273]

Trimethoprim (Proloprim, Trimpex) interferes with the bacterial folic acid pathway by inhibiting the dihydrofolate reductase enzyme in susceptible bacteria (see Fig. 33-2). This enzyme converts dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid during the biosynthesis of folic acid cofactors. By inhibiting this enzyme, trimethoprim directly interferes with the production of folic acid cofactors, and subsequent production of vital bacterial nucleic acids is impaired. [Pg.513]

Supracombin (Grunenthal)- Chemitrim (Biomedica Proloprim (Glaxo... [Pg.2119]

The introduction of trimethoprim in combination with sulfamethoxazole constitutes an important advance in the development of clinically effective antimicrobial agents. In addition to its combination with sulfamethoxazole (bactrim, septra, others), trimethoprim also is available as a singleentity preparation (proloprim, others). It is a diaminopyramidine. [Pg.720]

Trimethoprim (Proloprim) Not a sulfonamide. Inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, the enzyme which reduces tetrahydrofolate (Fig. 7.14). Enteric Gram-negatives (Proteus, E. coti, Klebsiella, Enterobacter), H influenzae, Shiigella, Serratia, Salmonella, Pneumocystis carinii Urinary tract infections, acute otitis media in children. [Pg.110]
