Progestogen derivatives

Levonorgestrel is a progestogen derivative. It is found either in combined oral contraceptives coupled with an oestrogen derivative or alone in progestogen-only contraceptives.

Chemical Analysis. Chemically, the various progestogens belong to one of three classes. Estranes are 19-nortestosterone derivatives (Fig. 1) gonanes are 19-nortestosterone derivatives with a C-13 ethyl group (Fig. 2) and pregnanes are 17-alpha-OH progesterone derivatives similar in stmcture to progesterone itself. 

The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of diene and cyclopentenone derivatives can be promoted by a chiral titanium catalyst prepared in situ from (Pr 0)2TiCl2 and a tartrate-derived o.,a,a, a -tetraalkyl-l,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol [54] (Eq. 8A.31). The resulting adducts can easily be tranformed to estrogens and progestogens. 

Oral contraceptives for women contain as active ingredients progestogens and oestrogens. These substances are semisynthetic derivatives, which are based on naturally occurring steroids.
