Professional goals

Professional Identification. Many technical professionals identify as strongly with their professions as with their company. Conflicts arise when organizational goals are not aligned with professional goals and the promotion of technical excellence. 

ONCE YOU SET a career path and acquire the education, skills, and experience you need to pursue your professional goals, your resume and cover letter will allow you to make that all-important first impression with employers as you begin applying for jobs. 

The books listed thus far are just a few of the many sources on time management. Some sources focus specifically on the busy professional and go into detail about how to manage meetings, phone calls, interruptions, and other activities that potentially can waste time in a busy professional s day. Other sources address time management as a subset of the whole person—personal and professional goals or mission in life, personality, communication style, and other traits because all these affect how we use our time. Although discussions about each of these subjects are beyond the scope of this chapter, this section highlights many of the principles from these references because they apply to all of us, no matter what our full-time job or personal characteristics. 

Identify how professionals goals and efforts tie into attaining organizational objectives. 

It is not uncommon for career objectives to change following experience in the many areas of practice typically provided in residencies. Hence, for applicants who are unsure about future professional goals, the best advise is to pursue training in a practice site that provides a solid grounding in patient care because many of the skills a resident will acquire are transferable across most areas of pharmacy practice. To this end, it is essential that potential applicants allow adequate time to review... 

Provide assistance to group members in achieving their professional goals.

Institutional support represents the support and encouragement provided by faculty and staff to students that assists them in their quest to succeed academically, acquire research skills, and achieve professional goals. It also includes resources such as laboratory, tutoring, advising, and other college or university-wide services. Students perceptions of faculty support stem from classroom interactions, office hours, research and lab experiences, and mentoring/advising services. We discuss the extent to which students experienced each of these aspects of support. 

Staff support. Students interviewed agreed that staff were generally encouraging toward students and helped them achieve professional goals. Similarly, most students interviewed mentioned that staff members (e.g., office managers or department secretaries) were friendly, helpful, and took time to speak with them when they visited their offices. To students, simple day-to-day type of assistance, for instance, assisting with information about next semester s class schedule, gives them the impression the department is supportive and cares about them . .. a bunch of secretaries that always help me out with small tasks so I have much support. ...

Give thoughtful consideration to your choice of elective courses, choosing those that further your educational and professional goals.
