Carbon disulphide is an excellent solvent for fats, oils, rubber, sulphur, bromine and iodine, and is used industrially as a solvent for extraction. It is also used in the production of viscose silk, when added to wood cellulose impregnated with sodium hydroxide solution, a viscous solution of cellulose xanthate is formed, and this can be extruded through a fine nozzle into acid, which decomposes the xanthate to give a glossy thread of cellulose. [Pg.202]

Antimony Oxide as a Primary Flame Retardant. Antimony oxide behaves as a condensed-phase flame retardant in cellulosic materials (2). It can be appHed by impregnating a fabric with a soluble antimony salt followed by a second treatment that precipitates antimony oxide in the fibers. When the treated fabric is exposed to a flame, the oxide reacts with the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose (qv) causing them to decompose endothermically. The decomposition products, water and char, cool the flame reactions while slowing the production and volatilization of flammable decomposition products (see Flaa retardants for textiles). [Pg.455]

The uniqueness of methyl methacrylate as a plastic component accounts for its industrial use in this capacity, and it far exceeds the combined volume of all of the other methacrylates. In addition to plastics, the various methacrylate polymers also find appHcation in sizable markets as diverse as lubricating oil additives, surface coatings (qv), impregnates, adhesives (qv), binders, sealers (see Sealants), and floor poHshes. It is impossible to segregate the total methacrylate polymer market because many of the polymers produced are copolymers with acrylates and other monomers. Laminates. Laminate manufacture involves the impregnation of a web with a Hquid phenoHc resin in a dip-coating operation. Solvent type, resin concentration, and viscosity determine the degree of fiber penetration. The treated web is dried in an oven and the resin cures, sometimes to the B-stage (semicured). Final resin content is between 30 and 70%. The dry sheet is cut and stacked, ready for lamination. In the curing step, multilayers of laminate are stacked or laid up in a press and cured at 150—175°C for several hours. The resins are generally low molecular weight resoles, which have been neutralized with the salt removed. Common carrier solvents for the varnish include acetone, alcohol, and toluene. Alkylated phenols such as cresols improve flexibiUty and moisture resistance in the fused products. [Pg.306]

The different types of furniture pohshes include hquid or paste solvent waxes, clear oil pohshes, emulsion oil pohshes, emulsion wax pohshes, and aerosol or spray pohshes (3). Nonwoven wipes impregnated with pohsh ingredients have been targeted at consumers who do not wish to expend the time to dust before polishing (11). Compilations of representative formulas are given in References 3, 4, 12, and 13. Paste waxes contain ca 25 wt % wax, the remainder being solvent. Clear oil pohshes contain 10—15 wt % oil and a small amount of wax, the rest being solvent. Aerosol or spray products may contain 2—5 wt % of a sihcone polymer, 1—3 wt % wax, 0—30 wt % hydrocarbon solvent, and ca 1 wt % emulsifier. The remainder is water. [Pg.209]
