Private organic certification

Network of the Rainforest Alliance (SAN), and the ILO. All IO AS-accredited certification bodies are expected to develop their own social standards based on these broad IFOAM standards for standards. Some private organic standards (lOAS accredited or not) already incorporate social standards into their certification. Often producer associations or cooperatives in developing countries are subject to social certification via fair trade in addition to their organic certification (SASA 2005). 

In countries that rely on high levels of imports such as the UK, or domestic transactions in the US where there are a high number of certifiers, both approaches require excessive levels of skilled labour for any individual certification office. This problem is accentuated by the existence and strength of private organic logos, which are particularly prevalent in Europe. 

Organic certification is also perceived as an effective communication strategy to final consumer, even if the LSR has recently introduced their organic private labels certified by its own and control system (ISMEA, 2001 ISMEA, 2002). 

A reason of misunderstanding is the basicly process-oriented eharaeteristie of organic certification. Since the Italian consumer is often more distrusting about publie and private institutions compared to other European citizens, actual demand may be negatively affected causing it to be generally lower in comparison with the potential demand. The issue of trust needs to be addressed and analyzed more in depth in Italy. 

A number of private organizations have developed programs that contain certification requirements and standards that apply to cosmetic products. The two most recognized are outline below. 

For farmers to be able to sell their products, consumers require sufficient confidence in the organic production and marketing processes to be willing to buy. Over the last 20 years, considerable effort has been expended by both public (state authorities) and private (e.g. farmers associations) organisations into developing a well-functioning certification scheme. As a result, many countries have credible organic standards and certification procedures. Availability of markets... 

February 2006, Samsung LCD TVs and monitors obtained RoHS certification by the Nemko Group, a private Norwegian organization offering testing, inspection and certification services concerning products, machinery, installations and systems worldwide. 

Establish a set of standards and certification and accreditation guidelines supported by the United States organic industry and community, including existing public and private certification agencies.
