Some private organic standards (lOAS accredited or not) already incorporate social standards into their certification. Often producer associations or cooperatives in developing countries are subject to social certification via fair trade in addition to their organic certification (SASA 2005). [Pg.338]

In countries that rely on high levels of imports such as the UK, or domestic transactions in the US where there are a high number of certifiers, both approaches require excessive levels of skilled labour for any individual certification office. This problem is accentuated by the existence and strength of private organic logos, which are particularly prevalent in Europe. [Pg.32]

Organic certification is also perceived as an effective communication strategy to final consumer, even if the LSR has recently introduced their organic private labels certified by its own and control system (ISMEA, 2001 ISMEA, 2002). [Pg.107]

A reason of misunderstanding is the basicly process-oriented eharaeteristie of organic certification. Since the Italian consumer is often more distrusting about publie and private institutions compared to other European citizens, actual demand may be negatively affected causing it to be generally lower in comparison with the potential demand.
