If a large number of samples are to be processed, Soxhlet-based procedures may be unduly cumbersome. As an alternative, attention has been given to the use of sonication in a variety of solvents although this procedure should clearly be carried out with care when the analytes are sensitive to oxidation which may be exacerbated by cavitation. Sonication has been effectively used for recovering neutral priority organic pollutants from a number of matrices (Ozretich and Schroeder 1986), and for four nitrated explosives from soil (Jenkins and Grant 1987). It should be recognized, however, that the recovery efficiencies for some compounds may be quite low compared with alternative procedures.
