Prior object

Hence whilst in the past corrosion control has involved, in the main, the use of metal alloys, protective coatings, inhibitors, etc. corrosion problems may now often be circumvented by the use of self-supporting organic polymers in the form of either rubbers or plastics. It must however be immediately stressed that such materials are not invariably inert to chemicals and they display their own particular response to such materials. A consideration of such behaviour will be a prior object of this section. [Pg.913]

The qm may be called the prior object or prior spectrum. We temporarily assume it to be known aside from the image data. Indeed, in the ML principle given later, the qm supplement the data and are inserted independently of them. We shall show in later sections how the qm, or at least a probability law for qm, may be estimated. [Pg.236]

So it is with knowledge of an empirical prior object nm. If N = 100 photons come from the object, and nx = 80 are from cell 1, this does not imply that for sure q1 = 80/100. All values of qx between 0 and 1 are still possible, according to a probability law. Hence, considering all the cells simultaneously, we seek the probability law... [Pg.242]

In particular, suppose that all the zm are equal. Then by Eq. (32) the prior object is imagined to be uniform. Why should such a choice of object be preferred over any other shape Would it not make more sense to allow for many possible ML objects to be present a priori, each with the same probability (ML solutions do not have to be unique, as discussed later.)... [Pg.245]

Perhaps the greatest fault with the choice (31) for representing zero prior knowledge is its assertion, with maximum conviction, that the prior object is equal-energy white. This is a definite statement about shape. Again, can this represent a state of zero prior knowledge ... [Pg.245]

Now any distribution qm of prior objects can be present (so long as they obey normalization), and each distribution has the same probability of occurring. Further, the use of this definition in principle (19) (with all Xm = 0 because there are no image data) yields a ML prior object obeying... [Pg.245]

The result is that the ML prior object that is consistent with definition (33) is actually an ensemble of objects, each occurring with the same likelihood. [Pg.245]

In the case (24) of empirical data, substitution into Eq. (38) gives hm in terms of the observed prior object nm. ... [Pg.247]

How do the form Qm of a prior object and the number z of degrees of freedom affect the estimate nm This was the problem (37) augmented by data constraints (50). Suppose in addition that the image data im suffer from Gaussian additive noise, so that Eq. (54) is true. Then the total estimator given by Eqs. (56) and (57) becomes... [Pg.254]

Eventually, only the drilling of an exploration well will prove the validity of the concept. A wildcat ls drilled in a region with no prior well control. Wells may either result in discoveries of oil and gas, or they find the objective zone water bearing in which case they are termed dry . [Pg.15]

With the reference block method the distance law of a model reflector is established experimentally prior to each ultrasonic test. The reference reflectors, mostly bore holes, are drilled into the reference block at different distances, e.g. ASME block. Prior to the test, the reference reflectors are scanned, and their maximised echo amplitudes are marked on the screen of the flaw detector. Finally all amplitude points are connected by a curve. This Distance Amplitude Curve (DAC) serves as the registration level and exactly shows the amplitude-over-distance behaviour" of the reference reflector for the probe in use. Also the individual characteristics of the material are automatically considered. However, this curve may only be applied for defect evaluation, in case the reference block and the test object are made of the same material and have undergone the same heat treatment. As with the DGS-Method, the value of any defect evaluation does not consider the shape and orientation of the defect. The reference block method is safe and easy to apply, and the operator need not to have a deep understanding about the theory of distance laws. [Pg.813]

Surface science has tlirived in recent years primarily because of its success at providing answers to frmdamental questions. One objective of such studies is to elucidate the basic mechanisms that control surface reactions. For example, a goal could be to detennine if CO dissociation occurs prior to oxidation over Pt catalysts. A second objective is then to extrapolate this microscopic view of surface reactions to the... [Pg.920]

AH these evolutionary methods foUow an initial synthesis method. The objective is to develop the best network design prior to the start of detailed and costiy calculation of individual network components. In practice, an approximate cost is usuaHy determined for the several candidates before one or more are selected for optimization. [Pg.525]

The principal objectives of pretreatment are to remove heavy metals prior to subsequent treatment, to neutralize the wastewater to a suitable pH for discharge or subsequent treatment to remove high concentrations of suspended soflds, to eliminate or reduce toxicity, and to eliminate or reduce volatiles. The concentrations of various pollutants that make pretreatment desirable are summarized in Table 7. [Pg.180]

The employer issues a hot work permit for hot work operations conducted on or near a covered process. The permit documents that the fire prevention and protection requirements in 29 CFR 1910.252(a) have been implemented prior to beginning the hot work operations it indicates the date(s) authorized for hot work and identifies the object on which hot work is performed. The permit is kept on file until completion of the hot work operations. [Pg.32]

Prior to conducting process studies a statement of objectives, the methods to be used, and the form in which the results are to be recorded should be defined. This might be called a Process Study Plan and be an output of process development (see clause 4.2.4.9). During process studies the results should be recorded in terms of measure-... [Pg.201]

When used as an input to design, HTA allows functional objectives to be specified at the higher levels of the analysis prior to final decisions being made about the hardware. This is important when allocating functions between personnel and automatic systems. [Pg.167]

This chapter provided several cost recommendations that, once implemented, would provide cost-effective added value to the operation of the FCC. Examples of such items include tips on debottlenecking the air blower, wet gas compressor, and catalyst circulation. This chapter also discussed the latest technologies regarding the riser termination devices, as well as feed injection systems. Prior to implementing any new technologies, it is critical that the objectives and the limitations of the unit are clearly defined to ensure the expected benefits of the new technology are realized. [Pg.306]

With materials like the stainless steels, which may be either active or passive in a test environment, it is common practice to produce a particular initial level of passivity or activity by some special chemical treatment prior to exposure. With stainless steels this objective may be subsidiary to eliminating surface contamination, such as iron from processing tools, by treatment in a nitric acid solution which might also be expected to achieve substantial passivity incidental to the cleaning action (ASTM A380 1988). [Pg.980]

Frieden s theory is that any physical measurement induces a transformation of Fisher information J I connecting the phenomenon being measured to intrinsic data. What we call physics - i.e. our objective description of phenomenologically observed behavior - thus derives from the Extreme Physical Information (EPI) principle, which is a variational principle. EPI asserts that, if we define K = I — J as the net physical information, K is an extremum. If one accepts this EPI principle as the foundation, the status of a Lagrangian is immediately elevated from that of a largely ad-hoc construction that yields a desired differential equation to a measure of physical information density that has a definite prior significance. [Pg.647]
