Motor nd Drive. The preferred prime mover for a fan is usually an electric motor. Eor fans of low to moderate power, V-belt drives are frequently employed. This permits selection of fans that can be operated over a wide range of speeds rather than being limited to motor synchronous speeds. Furthermore, change of speed is less expensive with V-belt drives. However, fans requiring powerful motors, 37—75 kW (50—100 hp) and higher, are generally directly connected to the motor and driven at synchronous speed.

In addition, the source of sponsorship may differ, reflecting centralized vs. decentralized corporate structures. In either case, effective sponsorship requires two tiers prime mover and key advocate, as shown in Figure 2-1. The prime mover, or primary sponsor, is the one who authorizes the initiative, while the key advocate is the individual without whose explicit support the initiative cannot go forward. To select the right sponsor for your company s PSM initiative, start by identifying the appropriate prime mover and key advocate. 

A final consideration in selecting a mixture of power generation or direct drive prime movers is exhaust ductwork. If a platform is surrounded by gas-combustion turbine drivers exhausting vertically, hot gases may create hazards at some wind conditions. Ductwork may need to be run Irom the exhaust to platform edge this should be minimized to assist area classification, helicopter landing patterns, and expense. 

We have discussed only a very small amount of information about pumps. A great deal more detail and practical operating information is available in books dealing with the selection of pumps. Space limitations preclude the inclusion of this detail here. In any specific application the user should consult with the pump vendors for assistance with details regarding materials of construction, installation, operation and maintenance, bearings, seals, valves, couplings, prime movers, and automatic controls. 

The load and speed of the equipment to which the engine will be coupled are key considerations in engine selection. The aim is to match the prime mover to the power required at a speed which will be compatible with the equipment to be driven, while maintaining optimum... 

Calibration for dose, water volume and drop size is now much easier to achieve. Nozzle selection guides help select most appropriate types and tractors - or prime mover - more readily attain, hold and record - spraying speeds. Electronic monitors can record total spray liquid emission, volumes of product used as well as the area treated and when. GPS based systems are recording where the product has been applied many developments that make PPP use fully accountable and traceable [Fig 5].
