Figure 10.4 presents an estimated cost breakdown of desalinated water produced in a typical plant. The main component is, of course, the capital and financial cost, comprised of the cost of the main equipment items feed tanks, pretreatment filtration units, pumps, pressure exchangers and piping, controls, membranes and membranes housing, post-treatment and product tanks. 

A narrow air channel connects the cavity to the outside and allows a pressure exchange with the surroundings. A typical actuator does have a circular air chamber with a diameter of 8 mm and a height of 400 pm with the resistor mounted in the middle between floor and ceiling . The thermal response (warming up and cooling down of the air) can be described with a thermal relaxation time xt which is mainly determined by the heat capacity of the heater-resistor and the heat conductivity of the gas [21]. A second relaxation time is determined by the heat capacity of the whole pump body and the heat conductivity of the body to its surroundings. Due to the air channels there is also a (third) pneumatic relaxation time xp. Since the pneumatic system is non-linear, xp can only be approximated. 

We can alternately exchange pairs of neighboring temperature values and pairs of neighboring pressure values during the replica-exchange simulation. Moreover, if we fix the temperature, we can have only the pressure-exchange process as a special case, which yields a one-dimensional random walk in the volume space.

Since the pressure exchanger operates on streams having the same volume, just a fraction of the high-pressure brine stream exiting the membrane module is fed to the device while the remainder (equivalent to the flow rate permeated across the osmosis membrane) is sent to a supplementary hydraulic turbine, whose power output practically represents the plant net effect.
