While they are often prescribed, the lower costs of codeine, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, thyroid hormones, calcium blockers, and benzodiazepines keep them off the list of top sales. Conversely, the higher cost of erythropoietins, antineo monoclonal antibodies, angiotensin II antagonists, antiarthritis drugs, and bisphosphonates put them on the list of top sales but not top prescriptions. [Pg.21]

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) report that cardiovascular-renal drugs (including diuretics, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers) were the most frequently prescribed medications in the United States in 1999 (the most recent year for which data was available). In fact, the loop diuretic Lasix was the second most frequently prescribed medication overall, with more than 12.9 million prescriptions written. In a Prescription-Event Monitoring study in 3085 patients, mean age 65 years, there were 11 possible drug interactions. Nine involved beta-blockers, with eight reports of bradycardia and one of syncope. One patient developed palpitation and dyspnea while also taking digoxin and sotalol. [Pg.2336]
