Premises storage areas

The premises for the various laboratories should be designed to suit the operations to be carried out in them. Sufficient space should be available to avoid mix-ups, contamination and cross-contamination. There should be adequate and suitable storage space for samples, standards, instruments, equipment, solvents, reagents and records. There should be an alarm system and an adequate system to monitor the temperature of the critical stage and storage areas. If there is an automatic alarm system, it has to be tested regularly to ensure its functionality. Daily temperature records should be kept and all the alarm checks should be documented. 

European and WHO GMP define in general terms preconditioned criteria that have to be met by premises, including storage areas, weighing areas etc. However this chapter does not define exactly what is appropriate in any specific facility. The emphasis is on the interrelationship between the demands, the building, the installations and the provisions. The scope is general so that all small-scale production facilities for healthcare establishments and preparation centres are covered in the discussion. Also ready-made premises or modules can be assessed by comparison of their qualities with the ones mentioned in this chapter.

What are called exemption limits tell you the quantities above which placards are required. For national exemption limits check your relevant local legislation. Individnal dangeions goods authorities m also issue guidance notes. There are three types of placards the one to be placed at the main entrance to the premises the placard or placards needed for specific package storage areas within the premises and the placard for tanks or bulk stores. Check your local legislation for the formats required. 

The inspeetors shall have the right to seal their office premises, ineluding the equipment storage area. 

This applies to storage of dangerous substances and/or preparations at any place, installation, premises, building or area of land, isolated or within an establishment, being a site used for the purpose of storage, except where that storage is associated with an installation covered by Annex I and where the substances in question appear in Annex III (see Table 1.3). 

In the Interior Valley in 1970, there were 71 winery premises and 88 in 1979, an increase of 17, whereas in the coastal area there were 169 premises in 1970 and 287 premises in 1979, an increase of 118 wine producing and wine storage facilities. 

Storage premises shall be sufficiently large to allow maintenance of good order and adherence to the first-in-first-out principle. A special area shall be dedicated to products for destruction. 

The layout in pharmacies should provide easy cleaning, sufficient lighting, separated product flows and dedicated areas (products to be dispensed, products to be delivered, products to be returned, products suspected of falsification and damaged products). Also dedicated areas for hazardous products such as medicinal gases, combustibles, flammable liquids and solids. The storage of hazardous products above a certain limit have specific requirements for the premises e.g. Facilities with blow off roofs. 

The loss control programme should examine such areas as the physical security of premises cash collection, handling, and distribution theft and pilfering vandalism storage of valuable and attractive items sabotage industrial espionage and the control of confidential data and methods.
