The third component is parameter estimation. Most predictors have parameters that must be assigned values before the predictor is fully specified. For many kinds of predictors there is also a cut-point that must be specified for translating a quantitative predictive index into a prediction (e.g., 0 or 1) for binary class prediction problems. [Pg.330]

Solubility parameters of dmgs (d2) have also been correlated with membrane absorption rates in model systems. A reasonable relationship was obtained between d2 and a logarithmic absorption term, thus providing one predictive index of absorption. Scott has said of solubility parameters and equations employing them that the theory offers a useful initial approach to a very wide area of solutions. Like a small-scale map for a very broad long-distance view of a sub-continent they are unlikely to prove highly accurate when a small area is examined carefully, but they are equally unlikely to prove completely absurd. ... [Pg.157]

This group of materials offers the most problems in colour measurement terms, because of the influence of translucency and light trapping effects on the colour results. Baardseth et al. (1988) reported that the prediction index for yam colour measurements was the least precise in the red/green parameter than for all the other foods evaluated in the paper, such as mashed potato, raw potato and raw cauliflower. The authors suggested that homogeneity was a key factor in obtaining the most precise prediction index, and that in the case of yams, therefore, variations in the fruit pieces may have been a factor in the loss of precision. [Pg.103]

ABSTRACT The relationship between gas desorption index of drill cuttings Kj and gas pressure was measured for four coal samples from Daning mine based on the measuring principle of index Kj. Then the variation characteristics of kj with gas content W were researched combined the proximate analysis of these samples. The results showed that There is a significant correlation between Kj and W This correlation can be expressed by an exponential function, and the two also are in accordance with the linear relation when the gas constant is low The results provide critical value study of coal and gas outburst prediction index and effective inspection index for regional outburst prevention theoretical with guidance. [Pg.907]

The predicted cumulative cash-flow curve for a project throughout its life forms the basis for more detailed evaluation. Many quantitative measures or indices have been proposed. In each case, important features of the cumulative cash-flow curve are identified and transformed into a single numerical measure as an index. [Pg.423]

When a customer agrees to purchase gas, product quality is specified in terms of the calorific value of the gas, measured by the Wobbe index (calorific value divided by density), the hydrocarbon dew point and the water dew point, and the fraction of other gases such as Nj, COj, HjS. The Wobbe index specification ensures that the gas the customer receives has a predictable calorific value and hence predictable burning characteristics. If the gas becomes lean, less energy is released, and if the gas becomes too rich there is a risk that the gas burners flame out . Water and hydrocarbon dew points (the pressure and temperature at which liquids start to drop out of the gas) are specified to ensure that over the range of temperature and pressure at which the gas is handled by the customer, no liquids will drop out (these could cause possible corrosion and/or hydrate formation). [Pg.194]

The refractive index of CCI4 at 20°C and 589 nm, the D line of the sodium spectrum, is 1.4607. At this temperature the density of this compound is 1.59 g cm . Use this information to calculate a for CCI4. Criticize or defend the following proposition The prediction that = f(R/X) may have been premature. The consideration of Eq. (10.3) which led to this conclusion could just as well predict = f(a /X). [Pg.669]

Cetane number is difficult to measure experimentally. Therefore, various correlation equations have been developed to predict cetane number from fuel properties. One such equation may be found in ASTM D4737 to calculate a cetane index (Cl). ASTM D975 allows use of Cl as an approximation if cetane numbers are not available. [Pg.192]

The guarded hot-plate method can be modified to perform dry and wet heat transfer testing (sweating skin model). Some plates contain simulated sweat glands and use a pumping mechanism to deUver water to the plate surface. Thermal comfort properties that can be deterrnined from this test are do, permeabihty index (/ ), and comfort limits. PermeabiUty index indicates moisture—heat permeabiUty through the fabric on a scale of 0 (completely impermeable) to 1 (completely permeable). This parameter indicates the effect of skin moisture on heat loss. Comfort limits are the predicted metaboHc activity levels that may be sustained while maintaining body thermal comfort in the test environment. [Pg.461]

Calcium Carbonate Protective Scale. The LangeHer saturation index (LSI) is a useful tool for predicting the tendency of a water to deposit or dissolve calcium carbonate. Work pubHshed in 1936 deals with the conditions at which a water is in equiHbrium with calcium carbonate. An equation developed by LangeHer makes it possible to predict the tendency of calcium carbonate either to precipitate or to dissolve under varying conditions. The equation expresses the relationship of pH, calcium, total alkalinity, dissolved soHds, and temperature as they relate to the solubiHty of calcium carbonate in waters with a pH of 6.5—9.5 ... [Pg.268]

Where waters have a stabiHty index of 6.0 or less, scaling increases and the tendency to corrode decreases. Where the stabiHty index exceeds 7.0, scaling may not occur at all. As the stabihty index rises above 7.5 or 8.0, the probabiHty of corrosion increases. Use of the LSI together with the Stabihty Index contributes to more accurate prediction of the scaling or corrosive tendencies of a water. [Pg.269]

The solvophobic model has been used to deduce a functional form for a Henry s constant correlation based on molecular coimectivity index and polarizabiHty (42). Accurate predictions are reported over a span of seven log units in Henry s constant. A reHable solvophobic model of aqueous solubiHty has also been reported (45,46). [Pg.236]
