The concept of a contact lens device for modifying the optical power of the eye was described by Leonardo da Vinci and later by Rene Descartes and Thomas Young. In 1823, Sir John Herschel described the appHcation of a contact lens device specifically for the purpose of correcting vision. The first contact lens was fitted to a human eye for correction of vision in 1888. The early lenses were made of blown or molded glass and were difficult to wear. [Pg.99]

Mechanical cleaning of the inside of the tubes was described by John [Chem. Eng., 66, I87-I92 (Dec. 14, 1959)]. Rods and conventional mechanic tube cleaners cannot pass from one end of the U tube to the other. Power-driven tube cleaners, which can clean both the straight legs of the tubes and the bends, are available. [Pg.1069]

When John Phillips, in 1991, presented the practical possibility of acquiring a real comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatographic separation (33), the analytical chemists in the oil industry were quick to pounce upon this technique. Venkatramani and Phillips (34) subsequently indicated that GC X GC is a very powerful technique, which offers a very high peak capacity, and is therefore eminently suitable for analysing complex oil samples. These authors were able to count over 10 000 peaks in a GC X GC chromatogram of a kerosine. Blomberg, Beens and co-workers... [Pg.397]

The oldest form of combined heat and power is the smokejack, developed in Tibet to turn prayer wheels during religious ceremonies. Captured Tartar slaves introduced this device into Europe by the early fourteenth centuiy and Leonardo da Vinci sketched one around 1480. Commentators as diverse as Montaigne (1580), John Evelyn (1675), and Benjamin Franklin... [Pg.266]
