Powders insecticides

Ice, inorganic salts, iron oxide, iron powder, insecticides... 

Mixer-loaders. The mixer-loader operation was not inherently different for ground, aerial, or handgun applications. Several factors affected the hourly dermal exposure (HDE) to these workers (Table II). These included (1) the formulation used, (2) whether or not the worker wore gloves, and (3) the method of removing the powdered insecticide from its container prior to mixing. 

Cube root. A powdered insecticidal preparation containing 5% rotenone. 

Properties Clear, lustrous crystals or white powder. Insecticide grade frequently dyed blue. D 2.558 (41C), mp 988C, bp 1695C. Soluble in water very slightly soluble in alcohol. 

In order to illustrate the variety of active ingredients used with PBO over a lengthy period, the Australian market leader, Rcckitt Colman s Mortein , is used as an example. Mortein was first established around 880 as a powdered insecticide. It was extended to a liquid in 1928 and to an aerosol in 1953 (Edwarn s, 1982). The Mortem red can (Pressure Pak /Fust Knockdown) has always been the flagship insecticide for this brand. It has contained PBO in a variety of combinations for over 30 years, Examples are shown in Table 17.2. 

In the agricultural chemical industry, wetting agent in wettable powder insecticide formulations. 

Application. The useflilness of any insecticide is substantially dependent upon its proper appHcation and this is deterrnined by the properties of the insecticide, the habits of the pest to be controlled, and the site of the appHcation to be made. The three general methods of applying insecticides are spraying, with water or oil as the principal carrier dusting, with a fine dry powder as the carrier and fumigation, where the insecticide is appHed as a gas (1).

Rotenone is a complex flavonoid found in the plant Derris ellyptica. It acts by inhibiting electron transport in the mitochondrion. Derris powder is an insecticidal preparation made from the plant, which is highly toxic to hsh. 

The use of pure gamma isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane on livestock has also been worked out. It has been found possible to use the wettable powder formulation dispersed in water as a spray on livestock for control of flies, lice, and ticks. Proper dosage and application must be used, of course, but this is again indicative of the safety factor of this insecticide. 

Still another requirement is that the concentrated form of the insecticide readily combines with various types of vehicles. At the present time, pure DDT can be dissolved only in organic solvents, and it has been necessary to provide a 50% water-dispersible DDT powder when wrater was to be used as the vehicle. With the advent of 90% water-dispersible DDT, it may be possible to utilize this material in the preparation of both water suspensions and organic solutions of the chemical. The ideal chemical in this respect would be one that could be shipped as 100% dust, and could be readily diluted with inert dust, water, and organic solvents in the field.

This dosage form will be most familiar to the pharmacist since it is used for companion animals (dogs and cats) and is sold in most drugstores, supermarkets, and animal health product centers. There are two types of flea and tick collars, also known as slow-release pesticide generators vaporous and powder-producing collars. Both contain the insecticide and a plasticized solid thermoplastic resin. 

Trigard 75 WP is a new insecticide with a unique mode of action and a unique triazine structure. It is a solid formulated as a wettable powder and is packaged in water-soluble bags. The active ingredient in Trigard has the common name cyromazine. Cyromazine is a triazine, but, unlike the well-known triazine herbicides, this compound has insecticidal properties and no herbicidal activity. Cyromazine has low mammalian toxicity and low vapor pressure. It is hydrophilic, so dermal penetration is expected to be... 

The most important application for singlet oxygen generators (SOGs), namely the anti-cancer treatment known as photodynamic therapy (PDT), is described elsewhere in this series (see Chapter 9.22).
