Potassium molybdate

Typically, molybdate-based formulations are liquids having approximately 10% sodium molybdate (Na2Mo04 2H20) combined with either a lower percentage of silicate or a higher percentage of nitrite. Sodium molybdate is commercially available as a 41% solution or 100% crystalline powder. Potassium molybdate (K2Mo04) is also available. 

Normal molybdates are prepared by two methods (1) precipitating the insoluble metal molybdates obtained by adding the salt solution of the desired metal to a solution of sodium or potassium molybdate, and (2) neutrahzing a slurry or solution of molybdenum trioxide with the hydroxide or carbonate of the desired metal. For example, sodium molybdate, Na2Mo04, may be obtained as a dihydrate by evaporating an aqueous solution of molybdenum trioxide and sodium hydroxide. Heating the dihydrate at 100°C converts it to the anhydrous salt. Also, the normal molybdates of certain metals can be prepared by fusion of molybdenum trioxide with the desired metal oxide. 

The interaction of propene and oxygen with sodium and potassium molybdates was studied by Burlamacchi et al. [66]. ESR measurements reveal that Mos+ is formed (at 380°C) although the catalytic activity is zero. The reoxidation appears to be very difficult. The authors conclude that a cation like Bi3+ or Fe3+ is required to facilitate reoxidation.

Normal Silver Molybdate, Ag2Mo04, is obtained as a yellowish-wiiite flocculcnt precipitate by double decomposition of solutions of silver nitrate and normal potassium molybdate it may be obtained in colourless erj-stals by slowiy evaporating strongly ammoniacal solutions of silver nitrate and molybdie acid. It is readily fusible, is slightly soluble in water, and is soluble in nitric acid, potassium cyanide, and ammonia. ... 

Silicon carbide whiskers are generally manufaclured by a metal-catalyzed process, in which carbon and silicon are condensed from the gas phase. Another jtroccss utilizes rice husks decomposed at 500°C. At temperatures of 1800°C the carbon/Si02-mixture formed is converted into a-SiC. Potassium titanate whiskers are synthesized from potassium molybdate, potassium carbonate and litanium dioxide at temperatures above 1200°C.

Potassium molybdate is dissolved in HCl and reduced at a cathode immersed in a clay cell. Gaseous HCl is bubbled through the cathode liquor to precipitate the KaMoCla. 

Potassium molybdate solutions rich in HgOg are treated with One equivalent of mineral acid per mole of molybdate, whereupon KHMoOe 2 HgO crystallizes.
