Positron-sensitive detection

Recently, whole-body imaging modalities like dual-modality positron emission tomography/com-puted tomography (PET-CT) and whole-body MRI have been introduced and offer a complete head-to-toe coverage of the patient in a single examination with an accurate and sensitive detection of tumor spread [1,33,40]. 

Positron annihilation studies are suitable for the sensitive detection of delocalized unpaired electrons and spin density, and by this means for following changes in the coordination spheres of complexes in solution, e.g, in solvate complexes. In these studies the Ps atom plays the role of a free radical, and its reactions are comparable to the analogous reactions of other free radicals. 

The sensitivity of o-Ps to small holes and defects in the material renders PALS a potentially interesting technique for studying composites. If the adhesion between the filler/fibres and the matrix is poor, small voids or defects may be present at the interface which may be detected by the positrons. PET uses positron emission to increase sensitivity of detection over SPECT. Once a positron is emitted from the radioactive atom on the labeled molecule, it travels a short distance (2-5 mm, depending on the energy of the emitted positron)...
