Portland cement solidification processes

The HAZCON solidification process is an ex situ technology for the immobilization of metals and inorganic hazardous wastes in wet or dry soil and sludges. The technology is a cement-based process in which the contaminated material is mixed with pozzolanic materials such as Portland cement, a patented additive called Chloranan, and water. The process is capable of treating solids, sludges, semisolids, or liquids. The mixture hardens into a cohesive mass that immobilizes heavy metals. [Pg.602]

Solidification/stabilization Refers to reducing the mobility of a contaminant in soils, other solids, or even liquid wastes by mixing them with Portland cement, lime, cement kiln dust, clays, slags, polymers, water treatment sludges, iron-rich gypsum, fly ash, and/or other binders. The process decreases the mobility of contaminants through physical encapsulation (solidification) and chemical bonding between the contaminants and the binders (stabilization). [Pg.466]

Solidification with cement generally is accomplished with a Portland cement and other additives. The quantity of cement can be varied according to the amount of moisture in the waste. Heavy metal cations in the waste form insoluble carbonates and hydroxides at the high pH of the mixture. The surface of the hardened mass can be coated with asphalt or other material to reduce leaching of hazardous components. If the waste is mixed with anhydrous cement and water there is the possibility of ions incorporation in the cement structure during the hydrolysis process. Heavy metal ions could bind with the cement by the process of chemisorption, precipitation, surface adsorption,... [Pg.165]

In the silicate- and cement-based process, Portland cement and other additives are added to either a wet or a sludge-like waste, which produces an impermeable rock-hke solid. The degree of solidification can be achieved by controlling the composition of the waste and the type of solidifying agent. Then these sohds are used for land reclamation and road construction. [Pg.72]
