Polyvinyl chloride processing aids

Polyvinyl chloride resin, because of its inherent thermal instability and wide range of applications, requires us to develop additive recipes based on specific application and processing requirements. Typical additive packages include stabilizers, plasticizers, waxes, processing aids, pigments, and mineral additives.

Processing aides are available in many forms including low-viscosity liquid, powders, and pellets. They are used at a level of 0.1-2 percent by weight of the resin. Processing aids are often used with polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polycarbonate, and polyethylene terephthalate resins. 

It is well known that polymer miscibility is not only important in the case of simple mixture, but it also determines the physical nature of block and graft copolymers. Multi-layer structures have been studied in recent years as a means for improving physical and mechanical properties of the polymer composition. It is possible to obtain a number of functional properties by means of the multi-stage sequential emulsion polymerization. As concerns this multi -layer structure, we have already reported some interesting results in a study of the processing aid for polyvinyl-chloride, 5 which amazingly improved the processability for polyvinylchloride due to its multi-stage polymer composition produced by sequential emulsion polymerization.

The term unplastidzed (also spelt unplastidsed ) means that there is no plasticizer present in the injection molding material but, it does not mean that there are no additives mixed in with the polyvinyl chloride plastic or, resin (PVC). Additives are essential in PVC technology as without them the plastic is useless as it cannot be processed. Some additives enhance the properties of the base PVC and permit its use in a wider range of applications. Examples of such additives include heat stabilizers (often based on lead or tin), lubricants (for example, butyl stearate), processing aids (which may be based on acrylic polymers), impact modifiers...
