The cooling requirements will be discussed further in Section 8.2.6. What is particularly noteworthy is the considerable difference in heating requirements between polymers. For example, the data in Table 8.1 assume similar melt temperatures for polystyrene and low-density polyethylene, yet the heat requirement per cm is only 295 J for polystyrene but 543 J for LDPE. It is also noteworthy that in spite of their high processing temperatures the heat requirements per unit volume for FEP (see Chapter 13) and polyethersulphone are, on the data supplied, the lowest for the polymers listed. [Pg.161]

A relationship has been developed by means of which more valid values are obtained by GPC for the average degrees of polymerization for cellulose. This can be extended to other polymers. With automation of data acquisition and computer processing of data, a differential molecular weight distribution and complete information on DP of the sample are available in very short order with a low degree of error. Polystyrene capacitors have exceptionally low tan S values (< 10 q, making them well suited for frequency-selective circuits in telecommunications equipment. Polymer capacitors are widely used for power-factor correction in fluorescent lighting units, and in start/run circuitry for medium-type electric motors used in washing machines, tumble-dryers and copying machines for example. They are also used in filter circuits to suppress radio frequencies transmitted along main leads. Such interference noise may originate from mechanical switches, furnace controllers and switch mode power supplies it not only spoils radio and television reception but can also cause serious faults in data-processing and computer equipment. [Pg.257]
