Polypropylene sebacate

Should be distd under reduced pressure under nitrogen and stored in the dark. Purified via the nitrosochloride [Waterman et al. Reel Trav Chim Pays-Bas 48 1191 7929]. For purification of optically active forms see Lynn [J Am Chem Sac 91 361 1919]. Small quantities (0.5mL) have been purified by GLC using helium as carrier gas and a column at 90 packed with 20 wt% of polypropylene sebacate on a Chromosorb support. Larger quantities were fractionally distd under reduced pressure in a column packed with stainless steel gauze spirals. Material could be dried with CaH2 or sodium, and stored in a refrigerator CaS04 and silica gel were not satisfactory because they induced spontaneous isomerisation. The combined ether and methanol extracts amounted to 34.7% and 44.3%, respectively. Wake [15] quotes the results of some unpublished work carried out at the laboratories of RAPRA - methanol extracted 40.5% and 36.8% from compositions containing 42.3% polypropylene sebacate and 36.4% polypropylene adipate, respectively. The extracts contained PVC equivalent to 0.6% and 0.9%, respectively. Clarke and Bazill [16] extracted with ether for 15 hours then with methanol for 8 hours. They state that ether removes plasticisers whose molecular weight is less than 1000.

To get improved chemical resistance replace a monomeric plasticizer, such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP), with a polymeric type, for example, polypropylene adipate (PPA) or polypropylene sebacate (PFS). PPAis useful for oil and fuel contact and PPS resist soaps and detergents.
