Polypropylene PVdC-coated

In general only the simpler materials can be thermoformed on cylinders using vacuum (e.g. PVC, polystyrene, PVdC coated PVC). Platens using pressure forming, particularly with plug assistance, not only offer more uniform blisters but can utilise the more complex materials, e.g. Aclar/PVC, polypropylene, coextrusions (Figure 13.4). [Pg.364]

Poly(vinylidene chloride). Poly(viayHdene chloride) [9002-85-1] (PVDC), most of which is produced by Dow Chemical, is best known in its saran or PVC-copolymerized form (see Vinylidene chloride and poly(VINYLIDENE chloride)). As solvent or emulsion coating, PVDC imparts high oxygen, fat, aroma, and water-vapor resistance to substrates such as ceUophane, oriented polypropylene, polyester, and nylon. [Pg.452]

Environmental concern with reference to PVC and the fact that burning (possibly as a distinction from controlled incineration) may generate obnoxious acid fumes has created pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to move away from PVC. The alternative materials which have been considered include PET (polyester) and PP (polypropylene). Both require higher softening temperatures than PVC and good heat control, which can be more readily achieved with modem equipment with an effective preheat system. However, this only applies to certain selected and special material grades. Although these materials can be coated with PVdC to improve the moisture barrier, there are pressures to ban PVdC as it also contains a chloride component. Suffice it to say that the replacement of PVdC and its associated barrier/heat seal features may not be easy to achieve. Current opinion is that PVC will not be replaced. [Pg.370]

Vinylidene chloride copolymers (PVDC) This set of polymers includes resins for extrusion and molding, resins for solution coating, and latexes for eoating. A variety of eomonomers are used to aehieve different properties. The barrier properties are important for food paekaging. Typically, these polymers are used with other polymers sueh as polyethylene or polypropylene in multi-layer structures. [Pg.864]
