Impact strength, polymers

The brittleness of isotactic polystyrenes has hindered their commercial development. Quoted Izod impact strengths are only 20% that of conventional amorphous polymer. Impact strength double that of the amorphous material has, however, been claimed when isotactic polymer is blended with a synthetic rubber or a polyolefin. [Pg.454]

Rubber Particle Size and Shape. If rubber particles act as crack or craze branch points along an advancing crack in matrix polymer, impact strength should depend on the frequency with which branch points are encountered. If C = rubber phase volume fraction, N = number of dispersed particles, and d = average particle diameter, N C -r (P, N is maximized as C increases or d decreases. The probability of an advancing crack hitting a particle as it advances an incremental distance is proportional to cross sectional area Nd2, which equals C/d. Again, C... [Pg.113]

Polymer blends are often used in adhesive formulations where properties associated with rigid polymers (high temperature resistance, chemical resistance, etc.) must be obtained along with properties associated with tough, elastic polymers (impact strength, high peel strength, etc.). Examples of these adhesive systems are nylon-epoxy, phenolic-nitrile, epoxy-polysulfide, epoxy-nitrile, and epoxyurethane. [Pg.436]

Tetralluoroethylene polymer has the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid. It has remarkable chemical resistance and a very low brittleness temperature ( — 100°C). Its dielectric constant and loss factor are low and stable across a broad temperature and frequency range. Its impact strength is high. [Pg.1016]

Acryhc modifiers for cement impact strength and adhesion to substrates are discussed in reference 211. Both water-soluble acryhc and acryhc emulsion polymers are used in the ceramic industry as temporary binders, deflocculants, and additive components in ceramic bodies and glazes (212) (see Ceramcs). [Pg.172]

Thermal Properties. ABS is also used as a base polymer in high performance alloys. Most common are ABS—polycarbonate alloys which extend the property balance achievable with ABS to offer even higher impact strength and heat resistance (2). [Pg.203]

DMPPO—polystyrene blends, because of the inherent flame resistance of the DMPPO component (oxygen index ca 29.5), can be made flame retardant without the use of halogenated additives that tend to lower impact strength and melt stabiUty in other polymers. Approximately one-half of total Noryl sales volume is in flame-retarded grades, ie, VO or VI in a 1.6-mm section (UL-94). [Pg.331]

Poly(vinyl chloride). PVC is one of the most important and versatile commodity polymers (Table 4). It is inherently flame retardant and chemically resistant and has found numerous and varied appHcations, principally because of its low price and capacity for being modified. Without modification, processibiUty, heat stabiUty, impact strength, and appearance all are poor. Thermal stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, impact modifiers, and other additives transform PVC into a very versatile polymer (257,258). [Pg.420]
