We shall focus here on the synthesis of the isocyanide-containing polymer. Several reactions of the polymer with the metal vapors of Cr, Fe and Ni using a matrix-scale modeling technique, as well as synthetic-scale metal vapor methods, are then presented in order to demonstrate the reactivity of the isocyanide groups on the polymer. Finally, preliminary studies of the reactivity of the polymer-based metal complexes are described. 

Focusing on reactions using the Fluid Matrix Technique, we have studied the interaction of chromium vapor with 2 at 200 K (13). The resulting film was found to contain metal complexes encapsulated within the polymer in which the isocyanide group adopts a well-defined octahedral arrangement around the chromium center, i.e. a species of type Cr(CN-[P])g. Since characterization of this metal complex within the polymer is not trivial we shall develop the analysis in a little detail. 

In this review, well-defined metal-containing PAEs are described whose primary structure is represented by one of the schematic drawings A-C and E shown in Fig. 2. In contrast to the structures shown in the A-C systems, E has a conjugated phenyleneethynylene with metal chelates as end groups. PAEs containing metal complex as side groups (D) have, up to now, not been described in the literature. The classes of compounds such as metal-bridged alkynes, the poly(metallayne)s, and polymer carbyne complexes (structures G and H) do not in fact represent PAEs. 

Recently, Shirai and Hojo25) have reported the synthesis of the soluble coordinate polymers containing metal-phthalocyanines in the main chain according to Scheme 2 (Eq. 7). The polymers obtained by polycondensation of metal-phthalocyanines bearing peripheral carboxy groups attached to various aromatics, -QH4-, -CsHr-CHz-CgH, exhibit higher conductivities (10-11 10-6 Q cm-1) than the corresponding monomer complexes. 

Scheme 2.7 shows the synthesis of organomolybdenum polymers containing metal-metal bonds.83 Polymer 36 was prepared via reaction of trans-Mo(CO)3Cl containing t)5-Mo complexes with MeMgCl. They displayed poor solubilities.

There are many examples of polymers containing transition metals coordinated to bipyridine and related ligands (150-164). The luminescent properties of tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes have generated a great deal of interest in these materials (152-158). Polymers containing metal ions coordinated to three bipyridine or substituted pyridines can contain the metal as an integral part of the polymer skeleton (66) (165-168), pendent to the polymer backbone (67) (154 156), or in a group pendent to the polymer backbone (68) (157,158). 

There are numerous examples of dendrimers and star polymers containing metal coordination complexes (253-259). The synthesis of polypsrridine ruthenium coordination complexes incorporating Fe and Co (113) has been established (255). A ruthenium star-shaped complex with a CpFe" "-coordinated arene as the core has also been reported (254).
