Polymeric binders, density

Oxidizers. The characteristics of the oxidizer affect the baUistic and mechanical properties of a composite propellant as well as the processibihty. Oxidizers are selected to provide the best combination of available oxygen, high density, low heat of formation, and maximum gas volume in reaction with binders. Increases in oxidizer content increase the density, the adiabatic flame temperature, and the specific impulse of a propellant up to a maximum. The most commonly used inorganic oxidizer in both composite and nitroceUulose-based rocket propellant is ammonium perchlorate. The primary combustion products of an ammonium perchlorate propellant and a polymeric binder containing C, H, and O are CO2, H2, O2, and HCl. Ammonium nitrate has been used in slow burning propellants, and where a smokeless exhaust is requited. Nitramines such as RDX and HMX have also been used where maximum energy is essential. [Pg.39]

One such monolithic carbon has been produced by Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons and is described by Tamainot-Telto and Critoph [17]. Powdered activated carbon is mixed with a polymeric binder, compressed in a die and fired to produce a monolith of the desired shape, with a density of 713 kg/m and conductivity of 0.33 W/mK. A heat transfer coefficient of 200 W/m K has been measured between the blocks and aluminium fins. [Pg.336]

There is no question that the development and commercialization of lithium ion batteries in recent years is one of the most important successes of modem electrochemistiy. Recent commercial systems for power sources show high energy density, improved rate capabilities and extended cycle life. The major components in most of the commercial Li-ion batteries are graphite electrodes, LiCo02 cathodes and electrolyte solutions based on mixtures of alkyl carbonate solvents, and LiPF6 as the salt.1 The electrodes for these batteries always have a composite structure that includes a metallic current collector (usually copper or aluminum foil/grid for the anode and cathode, respectively), the active mass comprises micrometric size particles and a polymeric binder. [Pg.216]

In the energy domain, new and efficient uses in gas lines, electric cable ducts and the like, will promote surface stabilization and endurance as well as complex stress capability of various extruded or cast systems. Such reactants as acetylene terminated polymers have yielded cross-linked cured, networks of exceptional density and durability. A diimide dianhydride combined with (3) ethynylaniline yields an acetylene terminated tetraimide. On further polymerization at 250°C, the cross-linked structure derived can be used continuously at about 230°C. When this is combined with polymer carbon fibers or filaments, an exceedingly refractory and tough binder is produced. [Pg.198]
