Polymer supported reagents industrial applications

While the yields are high and the reactions arc easy to perform, polymer-supported fluorides and acid fluorides clearly have some disadvantages the reagents are not commercially available and must be prepared by multistep procedures. Another disadvantage, which makes them unsuitable for industrial application, is the bad space/time yields, i.e. relatively high amounts (volumes) of the reagents are usually required. 

In summary, development of functional polymers that can act as efficient organocatalysts is at the origin of the application of modified polymers as reagents and catalysts in chemistry. To date, the most successful accomplishments have been carried out in the area of basic and acid catalysts. The solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides has not reached the level of sophistication as that for peptides. The design of an appropriate solid support has been difficult with such problems as undesirable polymer characteristics and irreversible adsorption of reagents onto the support. Only recently have appropriate polymer matrices (e.g., HPLC silica) been described that appear to have potential for the synthesis of nucleotide polymers. In fact, a major impetus for the development of solid phase methodology for the synthesis of polydeoxyribonucleotide (DNA) sequences has been the industrial application of the so-called biotechnology or recombinant DNA technology.
