Pu polymers

There have been many investigations into the behaviour of plutonium in soil (32-37). In laboratory studies Rhodes (33) has demonstrated that the adsorption of trace quantities of plutonium onto soil particles was pH dependent. Over the pH range 2 to 8, approximately 98-100% of the plutonium was adsorbed from aqueous solution but in the range pH 8—12 the adsorption decreased to 80%. On the basis of ultrafiltration studies Rhodes concluded that the trace quantities of plutonium were polymerising at pH2 and above to give positively charged polymers, (Pu(OH)+)n, which... [Pg.55]

To interpret the behavior of Pu in experimental studies, it is important to define the chemical species present. The addition of Pu(IV) as nitrate or chloride salts to soil used in laboratory or greenhouse experiments does not guarantee that Pu polymer, Pu(VI), and possible other oxidation states are absent. The results... [Pg.77]

Unfortunately, many human lives were lost and many valuable buildings, constructions and materials were totally destroyed due to the high combustibility of polymers, PU included. [Pg.477]

Results of in situ tests on airfield pavements. Effectiveness of the innovative repair method was observed for over 3 years and tested using measurements for over one year. The polymer (PU) bonded slab and the not damaged one (with joints filled with bituminous mass) were chosen for comparison. Distribution of measure points, allowing measuring vertical and horizontal displacements of airfield slab edges and comers, was presented in [12] with detailed test results. [Pg.236]

As noted in the preceding section, IGC is an excellent tool for measurements of surface properties and of acid base interaction potentials of macromolecular solids (2,10,16). In this section the importance of acid-base interactions relative to the adhesion of PUs is considered in greater detail. IGC has been applied to a series of PU adhesives and to selected polymer substrates, allowing quantitative measurements to be made of the acid/base (electron donor-acceptor) interaction parameters applicable to the surfaces of these materials. Acid base pair-interaction parameters for substrate/PU combinations have been calculated. The bond characteristics of polymer/PU combinations have been measured, in part by conventional lap-shear procedures and in part, by the more recent constrained blister detachment method [11, 12]. Possible relationships between bond properties and acid base interactions have been considered, and a comparison of the two adhesion tests has been made. [Pg.347]
