Because of the aqueous solubiUty of polyelectrolyte precursor polymers, another method of polymer blend formation is possible. The precursor polymer is co-dissolved with a water-soluble matrix polymer, and films of the blend are cast. With heating, the fully conjugated conducting polymer is generated to form the composite film. This technique has been used for poly(arylene vinylenes) with a variety of water-soluble matrix polymers, including polyacrjiamide, poly(ethylene oxide), polyvinylpyrroHdinone, methylceUulose, and hydroxypropylceUulose (139—141). These blends generally exhibit phase-separated morphologies. [Pg.39]

In the via precursor method, however, it is difficult to prepare the ji-conjugated polymers with ideally developed -conjugation system the -conjugated polymer chains contain many conformational defects because the jc-conjugated chains are caused to develop from disordered precursor polymer, which form random coil conformation, in solid state. For the preparation of polymers with well-developed jc-conjugation system by the via precursor method, accordingly, it is necessary to introduce orientational and conformational orderliness of the precursor polymers in the films. [Pg.321]

A totally different route based on dehydrogenation of a saturated polymer precursor was introduced by Francois et al. [49] (Scheme 2.9). The method is based on anionic copolymerization of cyclohexadiene with styrene, followed by oxidation with chloranil. Accidently, using hexafluoro-p-xylene with the contaminated copper wire obtained from the precursor method experiments, a polymer film was deposited on the silicon substrates.
