Poly thermo-oxidative degradation

Other Polymers. Various other polymers frequently require stabilization against thermal or thermo-oxidative degradation. Poly(vinylidene chloride) is stabilized by epoxides and sodium pyrophosphate.

Botelho and co-workers [25] made a comparative study of the thermo-oxidative degradation of poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) and poly(butylene naphthalate) (PBN) The mechanism of the degradation of model compounds for these two polymers was similar in many ways to that noted for the terephthalate equivalents [13]. 

In the case of poly(4-hydroxybenzoate) [29], thermo-oxidative degradation occurs only at very high temperature and even then only slowly. From the data available, it would appear that oxidation occurs at chain ends, and that reduction in molecular weight is brought about essentially by a depolymerisation process. This conjecture is backed by the fact that, even at 75% weight loss, the chemical composition of the remaining polymer is virtually unchanged.

Because of their potential for use in high-temperature environments the thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation behaviour of poly(pyromellitimides) continues to generate interest with e.s.r. studies on their thermal degradation behaviour and studies on the mechanism of thermal oxidation of bridging methylene groups in such polymers.

TVA-FTIR allows method development for online detection and quantification of degradation products, as they are formed in the TVA experiment. Stevenson et al [944] have used TVA and SATVA as a platform for spectroscopic investigations of polymer degradation processes, as in case of PMMA and poly(bisphenol A, 2-hydroxypropylether). The kinetics of thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation and characterisation of the various degradation products of polystyrene alone and in the presence [949] of the flame retardant IDBP were investigated using TVA, FTIR and GC-MS. Other applications of TVA in problems in polymer chemistry have been reported [943,952]. The method is now near defunct.
