Poly stability evaluation

The oxidation of high energy irradiated polymers progresses in relation with their basic component structure and formulation, which is initiated by the scission of backbones. The activation energy (Ea) required for oxidative degradation is the key of stability evaluation. The values of activation energies are placed on the range between 100 and 120 kJ moF for different classes of insulation materials (polyethylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, poly(vinyl chloride) used in the manufactures of cables for nuclear power plants [176]. The life time allows the prediction... [Pg.142]

Titania is being examined for use as a base material for bonded stationary phases because of its stability and its ability to separate bases under normal-phase conditions.Other researchers are investigating silica that has been surface modified with titanium oxide followed by the immobilization of poly(methyloctylsiloxane). These columns show promise for routine chromatographic analyses, but more research needs to be performed to evaluate the best manufacturing methods. [Pg.615]

The problem with using surfactant-modified stationary phases in LC is that the surfactant will usually slowly elute (bleed) from the support thus resulting in different retention behavior of solutes with time. This is why most applications are in the area of GC or GLC. An exciting recent advance has been reported by Okahata, et al (181). Namely, a procedure has been developed for immobilizing a stable surfactant vesicle bilayer as the stationary phase in GC. A bilayer polyion complex composed of DODAB vesicles and sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) was deposited on Uniport HP and its properties as a GC stationary phase evaluated. Unlike previous lipid bilayers which exhibited poor physical stability, the DODAB polyion phase was stable. Additionally, the temperature-retention behavior of test solutes exhibited a phase transition inflection point. The work demonstrates that immobilized surfactant vesicle bilayer stationary phases can be employed in GC separations (181). Further work in this direction will likely lead to many such unique gas chromatographic supports and novel separations. [Pg.34]

Currently in our laboratories we are exploring the role of anion structure and packing as well as intrastructural metal ion composition of these potential components of fire retardant formulations, as well as investigating LDHs for this purpose. The focus of this report is on evaluation of the effects of a zinc/copper HDS on thermal stability and flammability of low density poly(ethylene). [Pg.234]

A significant number of studies have been dedicated to the evaluation of poly(vinyl alcohol) thermal stability [1-8]. The TG curve for a poly(vinyl alcohol) sample with M , 89,000-98,000 is shown in Figure 6.5.1. The heating was done in air between 30° C and 830° C at a rate of 10° C/min. [Pg.311]

A number of studies were done to assess thermal stability of aromatic polyesters. Some of these studies describe flash pyrolysis [27-32]. Some studies are dedicated to slow thermal degradation in an inert atmosphere, and others describe the decomposition in specific conditions such as in the presence of humidity or in the presence of catalysts [33]. For example, thermal decomposition of poly(butylene terephthalate) was significantly influenced by the presence of water vapor, and the amount of the residues decrease with increasing the partial pressure of water in the atmosphere [34]. In another study, thermal stability of some small molecule phthalate esters was studied [35]. The results can be used for inferring information on the thermal stability of related polymers. The influence of substitution on the p-carbon atom was evaluated on compounds such as bis(2-aminobutyl) phthalate, bis(2-nitrobutyl) phthalate, bis(2,4-diphenylbutyl) phthalate, and dineopentyl phthalate. Only the phenyl groups were found to improve the heat resistance by the obstruction of the planar configuration necessary for the c/s-elimination and the hindrance of the formation of a six-membered cyclic transition state. [Pg.539]

The stability of superabsorbent polymers against UV irradiation was evaluated by measuring the decrease of viscosity of swollen gels of poly (acrylate). In Fig. 9, the changes of the retention of the viscosity of the polymer gels UV-irradiated as a function of the degree of neutralization of acrylic acid moiety in crosslinked poly(acrylic acids) with alkali are shown. [Pg.2889]
