Poly conjugation methods

It has also been shown that a new area of physics has been developed that uses vibrational infrared and Raman intensities for deriving nonlinear optical data for poly-conjugated materials. The NLO data already collected and discussed show the relevance of the method for materials science. [Pg.817]

Polyheterocycles. Heterocychc monomers such as pyrrole and thiophene form hiUy conjugated polymers (4) with the potential for doped conductivity when polymerization occurs in the 2, 5 positions as shown in equation 6. The heterocycle monomers can be polymerized by an oxidative coupling mechanism, which can be initiated by either chemical or electrochemical means. Similar methods have been used to synthesize poly(p-phenylenes). [Pg.36]

Because of the aqueous solubiUty of polyelectrolyte precursor polymers, another method of polymer blend formation is possible. The precursor polymer is co-dissolved with a water-soluble matrix polymer, and films of the blend are cast. With heating, the fully conjugated conducting polymer is generated to form the composite film. This technique has been used for poly(arylene vinylenes) with a variety of water-soluble matrix polymers, including polyacrjiamide, poly(ethylene oxide), polyvinylpyrroHdinone, methylceUulose, and hydroxypropylceUulose (139—141). These blends generally exhibit phase-separated morphologies. [Pg.39]

Poly(para-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) represent one of the most intensively investigated classes of rr-conjugated materials. Many synthetic procedures to generate unsubstituted and substituted PPVs have been developed. They include 1,6-polymerizations of 1,4-xylylene intermediates as well as several polycondensation methods. Parallel to the polymer syntheses, several series of PPV oligomers (OPVs) have been synthesized and characterized. Such model oligomers of different molecular size allow for a study of the dependence of electronic and optical properties on the length of the conjugated Ti-system. [Pg.163]

Figure 13 shows the irreversible conversion of a nonconjugated poly (p-phenylene pentadienylene) to a lithiun-doped conjugated derivative which has a semiconducting level of conductivity (0.1 to 1.0 S/cm) (29). Obviously, the neutral conjugated derivative of poly (p-phenylene pentadienylene) can then be reversibly generated from the n-type doped material by electrochemical undoping or by p-type compensation. A very similar synthetic method for the conversion of poly(acetylene-co-1,3-butadiene) to polyacetylene has been reported (30), Figure 14. This synthesis of polyacetylene from a nonconjugated precursor polymer containing isolated CH2 units in an otherwise conjugated chain is to be contrasted with the early approach of Marvel et al (6) in which an all-sp3 carbon chain was employed. CNTs can conjugate with nucleic acids via non-covalent bond. ssDNA, short double-stranded DNA and total RNA molecules can attach to the surface of CNTs and can disperse CNTs in aqueous environment. The poly(30T) has the highest dispersion efficiency (Zheng et al., 2003). For example, 1 mg DNA molecules mix with lmg CNTs in 1ml water, yield at most 4mg/ml CNT solution. DNA-CNT complexes can be purified or isolated by electronic properties such as agarose gel electrophoresis and centrifuge method (Cui et al., 2004a Karajanagi et al., 2004). [Pg.183]

The Pd-catalyzed C-C coupling (Sonogashira coupling) was applied to polymer synthesis about 20 years ago [23-25], and has especially been developed for the synthesis of n-conjugated poly(aryleneethynylene)s (PAEs) (for reviews, see refs. [16,26-33]). Recently other synthetic routes for PAEs were also developed, e.g., the alkyne metathesis method [28, 34] and the coupling reaction of =C-MR3 with R X (M=Si [35, 36] or Sn [37, 38]). In this review, we are concerned with the synthesis and chemical properties of PAEs with heteroaromatic rings. [Pg.183]
