We have seen from previous discussion that pollntion of snrface and gronndwater in the Asian region depends on both national and international decisions and agreements. To a major degree this is related to the solntion of transbonndary problems in water resonrces nse and water protection of snch great Asian rivers as the Mekong and the Indns. [Pg.211]

Based on this concept, many countries of the Asian region have reviewed or revised their national policies on water resources development and management (ESCAP, 2000). At present, common elements include  [Pg.211]

We will consider a few examples, which provide the explanation of these elements nse in different Asian countries. [Pg.211]

The concept of management of water resources within a river basin or sub-basin context, facilitating integration of land and water related issues, has been applied in Japan. Similarly, in India and China, the national water policy asserts that water resources planning be undertaken for a hydrological unit, such as a drainage basin or sub-basin. [Pg.212]
