Pokeweed Phytolacca americana, Phytolaccaceae). The fruits of this 1 - 3 m high plant, indigenous to North America and cultivated as an ornamental plant in North Africa and Europe, contain the betacyan dye betanin. Indians in Virginia and New England prepared a dye concentrate from P. and used it to dye basket-work, furs, and leather.
