Plugged taps

Pour a small quantity of flash-powder into the bore to cover the glow plug. Tap the barrel lightly to make sure that the powder flows into contact with the filament. This is the primer charge. Pour about one grain of pistol powder to cover the primer charge. Tamp in place with a small wad of cotton. 

The features detailed in this sketch will permit operating personnel to drain down acid-filled gauge glasses safely and blow out plugged taps. High-pressure liquid from the discharge of the alky effluent pump is used to wash acid sludge out of the taps. 

When the adsorbent has been introduced into the tube, the latter is fitted into a filter flask (see Fig. 77, 46, 2) to which a pump is attached the pump is run slowly and the column is again pressed down gently with the wooden pestle. The circumference of the upper surface is gently and uniformly tapped, especially where it is in contact with the glass surface, for about one minute air bubbles and channels are thus avoided when the solution is poured in. Some workers place a loose plug of cotton wool or a circle of filter paper at the top of the column in order to protect the solid from disturbance when the liquid is introduced.

There was a leak on the line supplj ing steam to a plant. To avoid a shutdown, a hot tap and stopple was carried out, that is, the line was bypassed and the leaking section plugged off (stoppled) while in use. The job went well mechanically, but the leak continued. It was then found that the leak was not coming from the steam line but from a hot condensate line next to it. The condensate flashed as it leaked, and the leak looked like a steam leak [26],...

For services where solids are present or evaporation of droplets on the mesh might leave a solid crust, it is usual practice to install sprays above or below the mesh to cover the unit with W ater (or suitable solvent) on scheduled (or necessary) operating times, as the plugging builds up. This is checked by a manometer or other differential pressure meter placed with taps on the top and bottom side of the mesh installation.
