Platinum ground state electronic configuration

These rather rare elements usually occur together and are called tlie platinum metals. Their ground-state electronic configurations are in doubt, but the tendency to complete the n — l)d level at the expense of the ns level increases across each triad. The almost uniform atomic radii arc naturally accompanied by great physical similarity. Because the radii of Pd + and Pt + are so small, the metals rarely form uncomplexed cations. 

What is the expected ground-state electron configuration for each of the following elements (a) tellurium (b) cesium (c) selenium (d) platinum (e) osmium (f) chromium. 

In conclusion we have seen that just as for Pd, for Pt a closed-shell state is responsible for H2 capture. However, in the case of Platinum this is an excited state albeit with exactly the same electron configuration as the Pd ground state. Pt is furthermore predicted to be more effective in activation of the H2 bond. Unfortunately in this case, contrary to Pd, no experimental studies adequate for comparison exist. On the other hand, as has been mentioned the mutual support of these different techniques (GVB, CAS-CCI and CISPSI) on the PtH2 system [36,46,48] should confirm the validity of our conclusions, pending experimental confirmation such as was obtained for PdH2 [20].
