Plate impact testing

Impact resistance is determined usiag flyer plate impact tests, long rod impact tests, Hopkinson bar tests (50), and the Hquid jet technique (51). Impact damage resistance is often quantified by measuring the postimpact strength of the ceramic. [Pg.326]

Figure 9.20 shows the setup for a symmetric plate impact test. The projectile here has a facing plate of ceramic and is backed with a low-density foam, for support of the ceramic during launch. The facing plate of the target is also made of ceramic. The lithium fluoride slab, which backs the target sample, serves as a window for the laser velocity interferometer (VISAR) that measures the time-resolved particle velocity at the sample/window interface. [Pg.343]

Armor Plate Impact Test and Bulk Compressibility Tests are described in PATR 1740, listed here as Ref 37... [Pg.346]

Also propellant charges for rockets and guns have also been developed by compounding solid explosives such as nitramines (e.g. -> Cy-clonite) with plastics. Plastic explosives and plastic propellants are of interest, if low thermal and impact sensitivity is needed (- LOVA -> Armor Plate Impact Test -> Friction Sensitivity -> Heat Sensitivity - Impact Sensitivity -> Projectile Impact Sensitifity - Susan Test). [Pg.318]

The bar impact test, which is a variation of the plate impact test, produces a one-dimensional compressive square stress pulse which neglects the effects of lateral inertia caused by Poisson s effect. This testing procedure was developed in the laboratory of the author and his colleague,30 and is described here in some detail. [Pg.100]

Armor Plate Impact Test(Shell Impact Test). This test was developed during WW II to provide an additional sensitivity test for HE s commonly used, and to supplement data obtained by impact and rifle-bullet tests. [Pg.704]

Flexed-Plate Impact. In flexed-plate impact, a ball, dart, or striker is driven by gravity or pressure into a thin plate supported by or clamped over an annular area. The nose of the dart is usually hemispherical, though sometimes square. A flex-plate impact test corresponds closely to conditions of actual... [Pg.595]
